Paris, France has been inhabited since the middle of the 3rd century BC. In 52 BC Roman soldiers founded a settlement on the left bank of the Seine River. Paris grew to become the economic, political, religious, and cultural capital of France. After World War II, France became a founding member of the European Union by signing the 1951 Treaty of Paris.
