The Brussels City Notebook cover art features the masterpiece painting. Strange Masks, painted in 1892 by James Ensor.

Ensor was born in 1860 in Ostend, Belgium, a North Sea coastal city on the European continent. North of the English Channel, it's located a short 67 miles from Brussels. Ensor, with his unique style, was a compelling force on the Modernist movements of Expressionism and Surrealism.

You may view the Strange Masks painting at the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium in Brussels.

About Brussels

A trip to Brussels will reward you with the 1401 Town Hall at Grand Place, a UNESCO World Heritage site. As the sun sets, look to the East side of the square and you'll see a beautiful glow on the House of the Dukes of Brabant. Look closely and you'll see the sculpture busts of various Dukes. In 1665 Brussels was bombed by troops of Louis XIV. This necessitated the reconstruction of the square. The house underwent more restoration in the late 1800's and a return to it's full beauty in 1987-1990.

During the 1920’s, Brussels embraced the new art form of comic art magazines. Over the years, giant art murals were painted onto outside walls. Take a free day long walk along the Comic Strip Route. It's a fun photography outing and of course you'll want to stop at a café, restaurant, or bar.

In 1958, the modern Atomium was built for the World Fair. It underwent major renovation between 2004-2006. Today, as a center for art, it's also an iconic international symbol representing the City of Brussels.
